- An internet provider giving free access in exchange for "free" advertising. Many companies are eager to show their banners on the internet. And you know you have to see them when you use these services.
Seems like a fair trade if you take commercials for granted. But is that all? No, it isn't. Read on. - What's behind the free internet provider?
- There's a lot more behind these services than you think. All information you provide makes you worth a goldmine.
You see, if you apply for such a provider service you have to fill out a lot of information. Some info may be optional, but you have to fill out at least your name, address, telephone number, age, gender etc. With that your provider has very valuable data of someone who is willing to see commercials.
You're on their List and they can sell such a list to any company willing to pay money for it. And lots of companies will do so! - Is it legal?
- Yes, why not? When you sign up you have an opportunity to see and study the conditions for their service. They probably contain a paragraph stating that you agree with that policy. Most people do not bother to read it. The service is very appealing so they take conditions for granted.
And sometimes these statements are in fine print or not described exactly as open as they are here. Now it may be a good idea to investigate their conditions a little closer. Take a look at the privacy policies. - Is there more?
- Yes, there is. It is very well possible that with a good (tracking) system in place your provider, with or without your knowledge, can see what sites you visit on the internet. Or if you receive or send a lot of mail and what times of the day you use your connection. And that is valuable information again, because they now can target their advertising customers to the right public. You may expect to receive some commercial emails (hey, they gave you the email address, so they know everything they need to know!).
- So this is not such a good service?
- Why not? If you want to have free access to the Net, by all means please do so. All that can happen to you is that you receive some commercial messages either by Email or by Snail-mail. And who says, that you aren't in some database for this purpose already? And since you already didn't mind reading commercials, who cares? It's just that I want you to know what's behind such service. You now know how this works and the choice is up to you.
