Enter a search phrase here.Use a directory or an engine? Here is the difference when you enter a search phrase. |
|
At many places on the web you'll find "enter search here" and click the button. But before you enter you should know what source suits your needs best. You see, a directory categorizes websites. When the owner submits his site to directories she has to choose the right category and submit her website from there. The site is evaluated (and if necessary placed in another category) by human beings to see if submission is done well. The search-engines don't do that. If web owners enter their pages for submission SE's send out little programs that index these pages based on the keywords they find. So if you're looking for a broad topic, let's say "travel" or "cell phones" or "software", you'll better use a directory. If you're looking for something very specific, like "last minute to Hawaii" or "nokia 2160" or "NetscapeŽ Communicator 4.7", try a search-engine. The funny thing on the web is, that both directories and engines are afraid to miss a lot of traffic. That's why lots of directories nowadays also have an engine and a lot of engines also have a directory. Just to inform you. :-) Excellent resources are: Directories Yahoo Open Directory LookSmart Snap Search-Engines Alta Vista Excite HotBot Go (InfoSeek) Lycos Northern Light Meta-Engines (they search several sources and only display the most relevant sites) IxQuick Dogpile AskJeeves is a special one. It tries to answer normal questions. One last remark. If you are an expert in searching the web, you have a great advantage. Alta Vista has an excellent tutorial.
